Sun Sails in Architecture

Modern architecture tends to use unusual forms which often require unusual building material as well. Especially for large buildings and halls such as indoor swimming pools, airports or railway stations, exhibition halls or shopping malls more and more light-weight and airy glass constructions are applied which enable interesting and energy saving light design. (Architektur, Lichtgestaltung)

Large glass surfaces are often sources of heat and therefore have to be equipped with an appropriate sun protection system. This is why sun protection is an important part of modern architecture in order to design the function and the appearance of a building in a positive and creative way.(Sonnenschutzanlagen , Hitzequellen)

Also in industry where large production and store halls often have to be build quickly and inexpensively these are often roofed with sun sails. This is why they are referred to as "Industrial Roofs". By means of this way of construction entire production facilities can even be transferred to a different location since the sail constructions can be used repeatedly. This saves a lot of material, money and time. (Sonnensegeln; Segelkonstruktionen)

Often sun sails are integrated in the architecture in such a subtle way that they are hardy perceived in their original purpose. Elsewhere, for example in soccer stadiums, complete roofs consist of connected sun sails. Nevertheless, it is worth the effort to have a look upwards while shopping in a modern shopping mall or waiting for the train or airplane to arrive.(Gebäudes, Sonnensegelformen)
